You would be crazy to tell me people would not appreciate a gift of both sweets and money. That’s why this money lei is always a perfect go-to! Whether your using it as a graduation lei, a gift for someone heading off to college, or tying the knot, this lei will put a smile on anyone’s face!

HINT: This tutorial uses our Werthers candy lei as a base. Visit that blog post to learn how to make that lei. Then come back here to learn how to add money to the lei.

Money Leis for Graduation

Step 1: Materials

Materials needed to make a money lei

What you will need:

  • 30-36 wrapped caramels (While I use Werther’s Original, any caramel that has this same style wrapping is fine)
  • Ribbon (about as many pieces as your pieces of candy-cut about 8-9inches)
  • Scissors
  • Dollar bills of choice (number of bills will vary depending on how many you choose to include)
  • Tape (optional)

Step 2: Fold Your Cash

When folding your cash, make sure to fold like an accordion starting from the side of the bill. The key is to keep the folds really small and tight. It will fan out better with more folds.

Step 3: Make Your Lei

As mentioned above, steps on how to make the basic Werther’s lei can be found in its own tutorial. To view that, click here.

Step 3: Tie Those Bills!

How to tie the bills for a money lei

Your lei should already be made by the time you are ready to attach your cash. Use an extra piece of ribbon to tie your fanned money in between two candies. Be sure to tie your bills down really well. Double knot it. Otherwise it will slip out at the simplest of movements.

It is up to you to decide how frequently a dollar bill will show up in your lei. The more bills you use, the more full your lei will look. For this tutorial, I placed a bill every two candies. (30 candies in the lei, 15 bills used.)

CREATIVITY TIME:

If you so desire, you can tape your money around to form a circle, as shown below. It will take a sharp eye and precision taping skill, so attempt at your own risk! (Not really, but it does take more time.)

If that isn’t for you, then you can just fan out your money on both sides, which is the approach I took this time.

Step 4: Curl Your Ribbon

Absolutely do not forget to curl your ribbon! It ties the whole look together! (Pun intended)

And just like that, you have your finished and first Candy-n-Cash Lei! Trust me when I say that everyone notices a lei with money on it.
