I have to admit, Twizzlers aren’t my favorite candy. But I know a lot of people love them.

How to make a graduation lei out of twizzlers

I’m more of a Red Vines man but I didn’t have any around the house so I went with Twizzlers for this weeks candy lei. Feel free to use Red Vines though, they’ll work just as well.

Young and Smylie Candies, established in 1845, is the maker of Twizzlers. The Twizzler brand was created in 1929 and grew to become a mainstream candy in the ’70s.

Fun fact, Red Twizzlers don’t actually contain any licorice. Only black licorice actually has licorice in it.

This candy lei made from Twizzlers is relatively easy. The hardest part is the braiding. Hopefully, the pictures will help you figure it out. I love the look of this lei once it’s finished. I think braided lei’s are some of the best. They’re fun to make and look awesome when worn. This lei in particular makes for a truly unique graduation lei.

Step 1: Materials for the Twizzlers Lei

For this lei you’ll need the following:

  • Twizzlers (or Red Vines)
  • Saran Wrap
  • An 8-9 inch strip of fabric ribbon

Step 2: Roll out the Saran Wrap

Roll out two 46-50 inch strips of saran wrap. Then cut both of them in half length wise. You’ll be left with four strips of saran wrap each 46-50 inches long.

Then place your Twizzlers on the saran wrap. You’ll want them to be towards the bottom to make it easy to roll up. Make sure to leave an inch or so on either end of the Twizzlers so that there’s extra saran wrap.

Step 3: Roll up the Twizzlers

Roll up all of your Twizzler strips. Make sure to roll them up tight. The saran wrap should hold itself closed so you don’t need to worry about tying it.

Bunch all of the strips together and twist the saran wrap from all four strips together. Though I don’t have it pictured I would recommend using a binder clip to hold the ends together. This will make it much easier to braid.

Step 4: Braid the Lei

I’m not even going to begin to try and explain how to do this braid. Hopefully the pictures above and this guide below will explain it well enough.

Step 5: Tie the Knot

Once your done braiding your Twizzlers bring the two ends together and use your ribbon to tie the ends together. Definitely double knot this because this is what’s holding your lei together.

Once you’ve tied the knot your done. You’ve made yourself a Twizzlers candy lei. If you get stuck or have any questions just let me know in the comments below.
